Round 9 : Submission 1 : Zed the Wizard

A few of you got the preview last week as I uploaded it as a second submission for Round #8, a couple of nice comments ensued, but no additional ratings, so I view this a ‘virgin’ still.

As I mentioned to a few folks that commented, this is the ‘20 years ago’ me, the ‘revert to type’ playing … took about 1.5 hours total from having the “Hmm let’s just do this quick” to uploading it. Rhythm track was 1 take, leads are complete takes too, though they trade off a bit and I must say I haven’t played with my whammy bar this much in a decade … <let the double entendres roll >

This was mostly done with the Rectifier amp simulator in my microcube, with some chorus and a little delay on it, the rhythm track is what I used to call my Randy Rhodes sound.

The piece itself I kinda made up as I went, I hacked a couple double bass patterns, did a few tom fills and let it rip. I had the chords loosely in my head and played the rhythm track almost spontaneously … noodled a little bit over it and then cut the solo takes. Probably the easiest time I’ve had doing one of these, was nice to see the early favorable reviews.

It’s loose Phrygian … chords are E5 D5 E5 F5 and the ‘chorus’ being C D E, the E-F flat 2 being the nod to Phrygian, as well as a couple of the lead lines. There is a lot of pentatonic minor in the whammy stuff.

Enjoy!
