You even have replies, but notice no ratings, since that’s kind of dumb for a round. I’ll be putting these on the other parts of the site soon too. /shed, /show/ and /gear posts.
I like this round. It it helping me learn more theory. The only difference between Locrian and Super Locrian is that Locrial has the 3, and Super Locrian has the 4.
Learning this scale is also good for my improv and soloing. I’ve been practicing the scale with the root on the 6 string (B), and trying to focus on keeping my thumb wrapped around the neck and my palm touching the back, with maximum economy of movement. It’s great for my chops and accuracy, but hard on the palm muscles and fingers. Whenever I stop concentrating and get lazy, my thumb goes back on the back of the neck, and my fingers get wild again.
It’s a fun sounding scale, I’m playing over two main chords (b3+b5 diad and 1+b3 diad, out of a Bmb5 scale), and there’s lots of cool sounding licks I’ve come up with. Unfortunately, I’m not recording most of them, and probably won’t remember them when I do go to record…
Yes, I found out long ago that I’d have some great lines when I practiced or goofed round, and then when I sat down to “get serious” I’d have nothing.
Now what I do is when I’m composing or goofing off with the idea of turning it into a song I just run my recorder in low quality mp3 and keep it around. Then I can go back and check it out.
Another thing I do is if I hit a great lick I like I transcribe it in my music notebook. That’s actually probably better than just recording it, but sometimes I’ll write it down, then later play it and it won’t make sense because I made an error. With the recording I’ve got everything I need.
So does it count as using Locrian if say the song is in the key of D using D phrygian, but when you have a Adim chord or something similar in the background, the D phrygian transforms to A Locrian?
Using the b5 against the tonic/root is really what gives the locrian sound, in fact the b5 is the only thing that distinguishes locrian from phrygian — so if your piece is in D phrygian I’d say you’re missing the point even though you may comp over an A dim and sound locrian for a measure or two.
All that said, it’s all about interpretation and how folks hear it, personally if I hear the perfect 5th in your root chord it’s a fail and clearly phrygian, but that’s just me … I’m sure we’ll have a phrygian round at some point — save it for there.
Hmm, like Hank says it’s all about that b5 note that makes it Locrian instead of Phrygian. But, modes really only exist in the context of some kind of harmony. So, play a Adim in the key of Bb and those notes sound Locrian. Play Dmin and they sound Phyrgian.
I’d say go for it, and then see if you can make the switch highlight the change to the Locrian mode for dramatic effect.
Yeah, with the tune I was messing around with, the phrygian really is overpowering: FAIL. But I’ve got some half-decent locrian improvisation going now (damn this mode is unstable), so I just have to make something coherent out of it.
I’m new here…great idea, great site! I’m missing one thing, however: how do I view all submissions for the current round? Is there a listed-out link somewhere or in the Flowplayer that I’m not seeing in Firefox? Thanks!
Also, on the home page or “latest” page (http://fretwar.com/round/latest) you’ll see a link that says something like “start listening to and rating submissions”.
Thanks for the reply. I see that link, but, when I click on it for this Round it goes to a User’s submission (http://fretwar.com/static/data/player/39/round/71/submission/) with no way to see the other submissions. Am I just missing something? I would think the Flowplayer would have all current submissions listed in a playlist, etc.
Well, the way to go to the next one is to rate the first you see. It the takes you to the comments page I think, and then there’s a link to rate more, which lets you check another. If you want to skip rating a submission, just check the winnars page (http://fretwar.com/winnars), that has all submissions listed, and click the submission names.
Thanks for coming by to check it out. So, first up the site is designed to encourage you to rate submissions. But, if you just want to listen to them, go to the round and to the right there’s a “Click to Play” link. That will play everything submitted so far, using the next/prev buttons on the player.
This is the first round comment, try them out by letting me know what you think of the round.

Rounds no longer allow comments after they are “done."
