Your Fretwar Stinks (and so does this)

Bashed this together in 45 minutes with single takes. Going for Mastodon/Slayer/R Zombie feel but fell short. The ‘voice’ is a pocket recorder playing close to my pickup so it is actually my guitar doing the cookie monster thing. Your fretwar stinks - and so does mine.

Open Satchel

Tried (and failed) to come up with an interesting gritty open position slower tempo thing. Worked on this for a few hours yesterday and still couldn’t salvage much inspiration. Going for quantity not quality.

Steve's Ghost

Came up with this pretty quickly and after tracking the acoustic parts, just doodled some. Probably could use a few overdubs or retakes but trying to avoid too much of that. Acoustic recorded from condenser (about 18” away) mixed with under saddle pickup. Melody and lead was direct in with countryish amp settings. Drums and percussion were apple loops. This time I recorded everything to a metronome (no drum tracks) and then tried to fit drums to it. Don’t really like how that sounded but I had a short window to lay down the acoustic stuff so it went in without much planning or song concept. Again used Logic and Apogee Duet.

Mixed Emotions

Started messing around in the key of G but kept it minor so I could play off of the happy mixolydian mode. Played D mix over Em/Am/C/D and it sorta took on a spanish vibe so I changed up the chords, added a ‘breezing’ sort of drum patch and out came really campy Strunz and Farah. All of the lead parts are in D Mixolydian. I anticipated the mixo round so had time this weekend to up the production value by way of working on the mix and mastering process.

Six Layer Finger Take

Had this idea a while ago but just threw something together tonight.

Open Minded

Was going to propose some sort of mode or scale but being short on time and talent, I took an easy way out.

23 Laps

Wrote this a while back but never recorded it. Single take recording with condenser about 10” away from the neck/body joint in a smallish room (noisy air conditioning vent) with bad acoustics. I added a smidge of EQ but that’s about it. Cleaned up the noise as best I could and added a fade at the end. About as bare bones as I get.

Blade Runner II

This poor replicant only made it to the first three questions on the Void Comp before it got found out…

Zombie Green Achers (sic)

A zany romp and a touching coming of age story between a newly married pair Kipp (Billy Bob Thorton) and Paris (Paris Hilton) who leave the glamorous world of New York to start a pig farm in rural Iowa. Light hearted fun until the undead appear and try to eat their brains. Rated R for ridiculous playing and over production .

Paster of Muppets

No piddly excuses this time (work, talent, gear, etc…) but this just sucks. Tried to work off of MoP but it was more of a flop.

Sometimes Late at Night

A melancholy love song (fragment). Played on 1977 Takamine Dreadnaught with old old old strings. Fishman under saddle pickup into my Line 6 212 amp with cleanish patch, rolled the bass off somewhat. Amp placed in short hallway with Shure SM57 mic about 2” from center of one of the speakers. A second mic (paned slightly right) was about 10” away from sound hole and with eq bosting the mid and high frequencies. The amp master vol was about 2.5 (just below where the guitar would feedback) and I recorded this in two takes (you can hear a rough crossfade about half way through) where I spliced in a better take on the end. I applied some light eq to both tracks and to the final mix to punch it up some. I was tuned down 1/2 step and the dead strings lacked brightness but that was the vibe i was going for. I ran out of time again this week so this continues my trend of roughish submissions (there are a few clips in the final mix just to prove it is from me) but I bounced it at 128k to see if that improves the uploaded result.

Keeping Day Job reprocessed

Processed the raw bounce to remove clips but introduced noise - sigh. Tis a poor craftsman that blames his tools. I clearly need to learn this new environment of mine.

C, not so F-N Sharp!

I had started on Round 14 but then spring break intervened. I was liking the happy vibe so I started to throw on a Lydian riff and then DJ-Sanity stepped in and stopped me at around : 30. Oh well. The next bit is the real submission and was recorded into my MBP using the internal mic so not the best quality (I also forgot to tune up…). The final bit (1:16) is my attempt at the bonus (to simply riff over a drone of some sort). Didn’t really work (sounded like a drunk Lee Ritenour playing with his feet…
